4 cups water
3 cups sugar
4 tablespoons instant coffee
2 cups dark rum or brandy
1 ounce vanilla

combine water, sugar and coffee and bring to a boil. Simmer very low,
uncovered for 1 hour. Cool completely. Add rum and vanilla.
