Canadian Apple-Oat Bars

Title: Canadian Apple-Oat Bars

Topping:
3/4 c Brown sugar; packed
1/4 ts Nutmeg; ground
1/4 c Flour
1/4 c Butter; cold
1/4 ts Cinnamon; ground
Base:
1 1/2 c Rolled oats
1/4 ts Salt
1 c Flour
1/2 c Butter
1/2 ts Baking powder
1 c Brown sugar; packed
1/2 ts Baking soda
1 Egg
1/2 ts Cinnamon
1 1/2 c Apple, tart, peeled; chopped
1/2 ts Nutmeg
1 c Walnuts; chopped
1/2 ts Allspice
Powdered sugar for dusting
1/4 ts Ground cloves

DESCRIPTION: Apples and nuts are baked into the batter of these
streusel-topped bars.
Preheat oven to 375. Butter a 9x13 baking dish. Streusel: In a medium
bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Using pastry
blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Refrigerate.
Cookie Base: In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, baking powder,
baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and salt. In large mixing
bowl, beat butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in
egg. Stir in flour mixture 1/2 c at a time, blending after each addition.
Stir in apple and nuts.

Spread evenly in buttered pan. Sprinkle top evenly with streusel
mixture. Bake 35-40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes
out clean and cookie begins to pull away from pan sides. Cool in pan on
rack. Dust lightly with powdered sugar. Cut into 24 bars. Store airtight
one week, freeze for longer storage. From "The Joy of Cookies."
